Satya means Truth narayana is the another face of Maha Vishnu. the satya narayana vrata is mentioned in Skanda Purana/Revakhanda. Vrata means Upavasam (fasting) Full day fasting is very importent in this pooja

The Satyanarayana Puja is usually done on the Full Moon (Purnima) day of every month or sankranti day (the first day of sawramana month) or any auspicious day you wish to do it. It is also done on special occasions, auspicious events, such as house warming,  weddings, birthdays etc  and during times of achievements as an offering of gratitude to the Lord Vishnu. In addition, it is said that a devotional performance of this puja will bear children to couples trying to start a family.

 the pooja starts in the evening with Ganapathi pooja  followed by the Pooja of Parivara devata,(assistent gods) Dikpaladevata,(gods off directions) and Navagraha Devata(the 9 planets). followed by the Dwarapalaka devata and Peetha devata Pooja Lord Satyanarayana is invoked with lakshmee by chanting Dhyanamantras and performed Shodhashopachara pooja with Purushasooktha. After the pnchamrutha abhisheka for the idle of vishnu or shaligrama  Angapooja, patrapooja, Pushpapooja, Ashtothara  and Vishnu sahasranama Archana also be done using flowers and leafs. In the form of Prasad many varieties of fruits and foods are offered. "Sapada bhaksha" is the very importent prasada made by the mixture  of banana, ghee, milk, wheat powder and sugar.

at the end of the pooja hearing five storys "Satyanarayan vrata Katha" wich was originally narrated by maha Vishnu  to the Sage Narada is very importent for the benefit of mankind. The devotees customarily undergo fasting while performing this Pooja.

Performing Satyanarayana Pooja gives prosperity,helth,welth, and abundance in life and it blesses the childless couple with progeny, the needy with material gains and business people get blessings to prosper in their businesses.
